In South America, cocoa farming for chocolate production has been associated with numerous human rights abuses. These include child labor, forced labor, and poor working conditions. Children are often exploited, and forced to work long hours in hazardous conditions, depriving them of education and a normal childhood. Workers, often from marginalized communities, face low wages, lack of access to healthcare, and exposure to harmful chemicals. Additionally, there are issues of land rights violations, with indigenous peoples and local communities being displaced from their lands to make way for cocoa plantations. These abuses persist due to weak enforcement of labor laws, limited government oversight, and the complex supply chains of the chocolate industry, which make it difficult to trace the origins of cocoa beans.

Choosing ethically produced and sourced products may seem more tiresome than just buying what is more readily available, but the supply also depends on the demand, so the more. effort we put into normalising ethical purchases will make the work of buying ethical far less burdensome
